About the Project

For “Roads to Power”, a major expansion to Crusader Kings III, we were tasked with blending authentic byzantine music into the already established soundtrack of Crusader Kings III as well as adding several fully orchestral event tracks and specific mood music to the “landless adventurer” theme introduced with this expansion. The event tracks are used to announce important gameplay events like the start of an adventure or a war. The mood music on the other hand has to blend into the existing audio landscape and integrate seamlessly with the music system.

The major challenge on this expansion was writing authentic byzantine music, which does not rely on western notation and pitch systems. To ensure a high level of authenticity we reached out to Prof. Dr. Konstantin Nikolakopoulos, an internationally renowned expert on greek orthodox theology and music, who was open to collaborate with us and let us record him singing byzantine music from the 9th century in a church in Munich. We blended these recordings with the established Crusader Kings III music style and also recorded Cretan Lyra as instrumental counterpart to the unique vocal performances.

Furthermore we recorded medieval lute and vihuela for the landless adventurer theme music to give them an authentic medieval vibe and a full symphony orchestra contracted by Budapest Scoring for the Main Theme and Event music.
